Dimensioning/SketchUp Tutorials

Today we will be taking a break from our kite construction to practice and become a little more proficient in SketchUp. We will learn how to add dimension lines to the tutorial tables that we will design through the first tutorial.

You will need to submit the top, font, and side views of the table before in a Google Doc by the end of the block. Include the name of the view next to the image and upload it to classroom.

History of Aviation

Today you will work with a partner and create a timeline presentation for the history of aviation. Below are a few topics/inventors/dates that you must include in your slideshow presentation. You will need to include additional information on other topics that you come across in your research. Each slide/date of the timeline should explain what happened at that point in history (you must write more than one sentence). The timeline should be visually appealing, include images for each date (if applicable), and a works cited page for your sources as well.

Aristotle
May 1937
Orville and Wilbur Wright
The Golden Age (this may take a few slides!)
Daniel Bernoulli
1928
Leonardo daVinci
Robert Brothers
Robert Goddard
July 16, 1969
1932- Amelia Earhart
Modern day airplanes
Otto Lilienthal

Be sure to submit your slideshow to classroom by the assigned time.

Google SketchUp

In class we will begin working in Google SketchUp. You will be required to view and complete the following tutorials by the end of the block. Listen and practice along with the director of the tutorials. You should be following along and doing exactly what she does. Pausing the tutorial at certain times may help.
Complete only tutorials 1 & 2 today. You do not need to save any work while doing the tutorial; it is simply just for you to practice and get the hang of the program.

SketchUp Tutorials

When you have finished the tutorials, I would like you to try to recreate the design from the tutorial. You can make any additions or modifications that you choose, but be sure the house represents in some way the one you created in the tutorial. You will take screen shots of the top, front, and side views (see example below). Then, you will insert and label them in a google doc, and then post the doc in classroom.

Design Process

Do Now:
In your journal, explain a time when you had to "redo" something (a project, presentation, etc.). Did you not do it correctly the first time? Were there improvements you added to make it better? Explain.

Today we will be learning about and implementing the engineering design process. Be sure to take notes in your journal during the lecture. You will be required to document the process during our in class activity.

Homework:
In a google doc, reflect on the design process and how your group went through the stages of it while developing your "tennis ball tower". Was your group successful? What are some modifications you can make to your structure? How did you successfully implement the design process through this activity?
Post your homework to your google classroom by the assigned due date.

September 11th Activity:

Individually, please respond to the following question in your journal online and then share it with me through google docs:

  • Jot down any memories you may have of 9/11, and reflect on them. If you do not have any memories of 9/11, think about what you might remember from another important and relevant  time in history and reflect on that.
  • What, if anything, has changed about the way in which Americans travel through an airport since September 11, 2001. Based on your conclusion answer one of the following questions: What is that cause of these changes? Why do you think there has not been a change?
  • Then, you may view the 9/11 timeline, found here.
Do NOT move on until I instruct you to do so.

Your first task will be to analyze the cartoon below. After 9/11, the Federal government took steps to increase airport security. Explain the cartoonist's point of view on this issue. Do you agree with the cartoonist? Why or why not? Answer these questions in your online journal. You will share your responses with your groups.
When you have finished, you will be split into groups and prepare a Google document titled, "September 11th Activity". Each group will answer the following questions that relate to the reading (article found here):
  • Boarding planes and flying was much easier before 9/11. What do you think are the three biggest changes since 9/11?
  • If you had to fly today, would the changes implemented by DHS and TSA make you feel safer and more secure?
  • In what ways has 9/11 changed the airlines and our sense of security?
  • Have there been any recent events concerning airline security that you have heard about? What happened?
  • Do you think the changes that have been made are sufficient, too much, or not enough? Explain.
The document must have all group members name on it and be posted into our classroom account by the due date.

Your homework for next class is to generate a list of five questions to ask a relative or close friend about the changes made to travel since September 11th. Post your questions and their answers in a Google document to our classroom site by next class.
